Wrapping up Summer Success

The end of July takes us right to the exciting back-to-school season at The Leaven. Over the next several weeks, all of our students will be headed back to the classroom for another year full of learning. It’s hard to believe that Summer Success is at an end for the year!

This summer, our students got to be super heroes, learn about music and art, play sports and fun outdoor games, and take exciting field trips. Summer Success is a time full of fun for Leaven kids, but it’s most important purpose is to help kids prevent the Summer Slide.

Studies have shown that kids can lose up to 2 months of reading progress over the summer. And for kids who already struggle in school, this slide can be devastating. Left unchecked, this can lead to illiteracy and failure in school — and the sad fact is that kids who fail and drop-out of school are more likely to end up in gangs or prison.

That’s why our Summer Success program is so important. Not only do we help students prevent the Summer Slide, but we can also ensure they continue up the progress they were making during the school year as they improve their reading all summer long. When Leaven students return to the classroom, they’ll be able to hit the ground running on the very first day, ready to learn new skills the entire school year.

This leads to better performance in school and better opportunities later in life. When kids succeed in school, it helps to break the cycle of poverty that many of these families have been trapped in for too long.

We’re grateful too all the volunteers who helped make Summer Success possible.  You’ve helped us make learning fun, and that leads to kids succeeding in school. And that’s just the start!  Communities become stronger and families have hope for the future. It’s just one more way that we’re helping kids and communities rise.
