The Journey

When I was in college we studied the writings of Henry David Thoreau. I had also read some of his works in high school and had found him to be horribly boring, but to my surprise, my readings in college were anything but boring. In fact, these readings became some of the most influential of my college career.

what_we_doThis week I was particularly reminded of this quote:

“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.”

The kids at The Leaven are living proof of the truth in these words. There are other tutoring programs available to these students, yet teachers, parents and administrators are huge supporters of our programs. It’s because The Leaven is more than just reading and math.

We teach life lessons and the importance of good citizenry. Members of the community stop by and volunteer to show our students the importance of serving your community. Our partnership with Travis Air Force Base helps us teach our kids about patriotism and service. All of the amazing folks who stop by and share their time and knowledge with our students are role models, helping to shape the lives and minds of our students.

We are improving our students’ reading and math abilities substantially, but we are also teaching them life lessons that they often won’t get in the classroom. We serve and support the parents and teachers who are working so hard to help these kids grow and succeed.

If there is one lesson we’ve learned since beginning The Leaven, it’s the importance of the journey to a meaningful future. We know it’s one these kids couldn’t make without the support of everyone in their community. Thank you for joining us on this journey towards brighter tomorrows by helping kids today. At The Leaven, we’re helping kids and communities rise.
