It’s hard to believe, but Thanksgiving is less than a week away! This is probably the start of my favorite time of year. I love cooking big feasts for my family and picking out gifts for my loved ones, not to mention decorating my home for the holidays.
In my home, we often spend the long Thanksgiving weekend enjoying time together, going to the movies, playing games, and enjoying the opportunity to sleep in. For me, it’s a time to cook some of my favorite recipes that I only bring out for special occasions.
A few years ago I started preparing my own pumpkin puree for my pies, which has turned into one of my favorite yearly rituals. We even began grilling our Turkey, rather than the traditional roasting. It’s a practice that I, as a former resident of the Midwest, find amusing.
Like many families, I also enjoy browsing all the Black Friday ads and putting up my Christmas tree over the Holiday weekend. Even if I don’t do much shopping or put up outdoor Christmas lights, it’s still fun to dress the tree and look at all of the colorful catalogs.
But for many families, this time of year can actually be one of the toughest. Struggling, hard-working families can’t afford to take a day off to celebrate the season with their families. They also can’t necessarily provide their families with special meals or presents – and as a parent, that hurts.
But you can make the holidays brighter for families throughout California by joining with The Leaven this year! Our 2015 Catalog for the Children is a catalog full of fun gift ideas for the whole family that make a big difference in the lives of our needy neighbors.
You can also share the spirit of Thanksgiving with families today by sponsoring a child, providing a year’s worth of Leaven programs to one child for just $25 a month. You can also give your time by volunteering at any of our programs.
By working together, we can make the holidays bright for struggling families throughout California because together we’re helping kids & communities rise!
