With the arrival of Spring comes thoughts of summer for the students at The Leaven. All year long they have worked hard to improve their reading and overall academic performance. Each of these kids works so hard, and summer is the time of year when they can relax and play, and just be kids.
But for many children, especially those with reading challenges, a summer spent away from the classroom can lead to the Summer Slide. After several weeks away from the classroom, many children’s reading skills can actually digress, costing them up to 2 months of progress.
And sometimes they never catch back up. In fact, 1 in 4 children in America grow up without learning to read.
That is why The Leaven’s Summer Success program is so important. By focusing on reading all summer long, kids continue to improve their reading skills, even when school isn’t in session. What’s more, by focusing on reading for fun, we help kids learn the joy of reading, so that it’s more than assignment, but a lifelong pleasure.
And you can make a big impact on the lives of these students this summer. By volunteering at any of our programs, even if for just one day, you can help share the joy of reading with all of our students. Simply go to myleaven.com/volunteer to sign-up today because together we are helping kids and communities rise!
