After months of dry, hot weather here in Southern California, we finally got some rain last week. I was sitting at my desk near an open window when the breeze started to pick up and, almost immediately, it seemed to cool down just a bit, the air felt cleaner, and I could hear the sound of the rain moving in until it finally reached my home.
As the winds from the west rolled in, I was reminded of the classic movie, Mary Poppins:
Winds in the east, mist coming in.
Like somethin’ is brewin’ and bout to begin.
Can’t put me finger on what lies in store
But I fear what’s to happen all happened before.
Change can be an exhilarating feeling. But unlike in the song, the change that is brewing in communities throughout California is nothing to fear! Communities where The Leaven is working are experiencing change that’s life-changing and lifesaving!
As you may know, our Leaven programs have been proven to help kids improve their academic performance. The teachers we partner with tell us that our tutoring helps kids master their basic reading and mathematics skills, meaning they can be more successful in the classroom.
Our partners in law enforcement also see the change. As more kids succeed in school, they are less likely to get into trouble. What’s more, neighbors are inspired by the change in these students and they begin work together to make their community a better place for children to grow. As a result, crime is going down dramatically in these communities.
These changes have just begun at the community level, but they are growing and expanding each year. We know that if we keep helping communities rise, even more exciting changes will come. Thank you for joining us in being an instrument of change. As the winds of change continue to blow, we’re excited to see what lies in store.
